Are skorts a must-have item of ladies golf wear?

Even on the golf course fashion is ever present, particularly for the growing number of women who are enjoying the game. And this year one question has been on many ladies’ lips, and consequently on the minds of ladies golf wear suppliers – shorts or skorts?

What is the secret of the skort’s success? Perhaps it lies in the combination of style and functionality that it provides. First developed by the Leon Levin clothing company in the 1960s as the ‘Q’ skirt, the skort offered women golfers the additional coverage and freedom of movement that came from wearing shorts, but with the look of a skirt.

Skorts can even be linked to the changing role of women in Western society during the 20th century, as they gave them more freedom to engage in outdoor activities that had previously been more commonly associated with the male of the species, such as gardening and sports.

Types of skort

With many professional female golfers sporting a skort on the links, their popularity has continued to soar. For ladies golf clothes retailers the choice is no longer whether or not to stock skorts, but what styles of skort they should offer their customers.

We’ve found that two particular types of skort are popular. The first type resemble a pair of shorts completely enveloped by a skirt, and these are generally favoured by customers who prefer the more traditional look of a skirt with the coverage that shorts provide. The other type also sells well, and instead has a flap of fabric at the front only over the shorts component.

Of course, while skorts are a favoured item of women’s golf clothing, they’re not just for golf, and you may find that sales are further propelled by those who utilise them for other sporting activities and outdoor chores.

Getting ready for winter on the golf course

For once, we’ve been treated to a great summer here in the UK and you might have loved stepping out onto the fairways in the blistering sunshine. However, all good things must come to an end and autumn is already upon us.

It may be a couple of months before the cold weather really sets in, but now’s the time to stock up on ladies’ golf wear for winter.

All seasons

OK, so if your golf course is covered under a foot of snow, or there’s horizontal icy rain, you might have to put your clubs down and find something else to do. However, with the right clothes, you should be able to get stuck into the game virtually year-round.

The important thing is to head onto the course fully prepared. You won’t be able to hit your best shots if you’re not feeling comfortable and, more importantly, you won’t enjoy yourself.

Cold, wet feet are a big no no

One of the most distracting things when you’re out there on the course trying your best is to have cold, wet feet. This is why it’s so important to have suitable women’s golf shoes. Here at LeSports we offer an impressive selection of footwear and should have exactly what you’re after.

For example, the Adidas Ladies GolfLite 3 Z Waterproof Golf Shoes can be ideal for damp, cold conditions. They are 100 per cent waterproof and they feature a soft EVA footbed for comfort and cushioning. In addition, they boast a low profile outsole with six cleats for improved stability.

No matter which shoes you opt for, make sure you wear thick socks under them on cold days. There’s plenty of standing around on the golf course and your feet can quickly get chilly.

Prepare for when the heavens open

At any time of year, the heavens can open here in Britain, but it’s especially important that you have effective waterproofs during the winter because if you get soaked, you’ll be freezing.

Perhaps the Adidas Ladies Provisional Rain Golf Jacket in passion colour will tick all of your boxes. This is critically seam-sealed and is waterproof to 3,000mm. It is also lightweight, meaning you can remove it and pack it away when you don’t need it.

Women’s waterproof trousers are also a must for damp days and the Adidas Climaproof Ladies Waterproof Golf Trousers in black are well worth a look. They provide protection from wind, rain and snow and come with handy front and back zipped pockets.

Layer up

Keeping your body temperature up between shots is often easier said than done, but by making sure you layer up, you can help ensure you stay toasty while you’re out and about on the course. With this in mind, you might want to invest in a Catmandoo Ladies Thermo Micro Fleece in black. This is soft, lightweight and very warm, while its stretch fabric allows for freedom of movement.

Use your head

Your head is where you will lose much of your body heat, so a hat is a must on those really cold days. We sell a selection of these items, including the Fila Vintage Winter Beanie Hat.

Choosing a Ladies’ Golf Glove

One of the most important golf accessories you can buy is a glove. Although not a requirement, most golfers will choose to wear a glove because it gives them better control of their clubs without needing to grip too hard. The material that the glove is made from will give much more grip against the club than the human hand, particularly when the latter is sweating or wet. A ladies’ golf glove can also give you more comfort and protection for your hands because it will reduce the amount of friction between your hands and the golf club’s rubber grip. Once you’ve found the right glove, you will soon notice the difference it gives your game.

You should take some time to look at different ladies’ golf gloves to make sure you find the right one for you. There are different sizes and styles available, so it is important to do some research and find your perfect glove. Here are some things to look out for.

Get the Right Hand

Your first consideration when looking at golf gloves should be to make sure that you choose a glove for the correct hand. Most golfers will only wear one glove and your gloved hand should be the one that sits at the top of the club, as this is your weak hand. This means that if you are a right-handed golfer, you should buy a left-handed glove, and vice versa.

Get the Right Fit

If a glove doesn’t fit correctly, it will weaken your grip and maybe even cause discomfort. Look specifically for ladies’ golf gloves and you will see that there is a range of sizes available. You need to make sure that the glove you choose is neither too tight nor too loose. Most gloves will have a Velcro strap on the back of the hand, and you should make sure that the strap fits squarely without being overstretched or having too much overlapping. Also consider the fingers to ensure that they fit correctly without being too baggy or too tight.

Get the Right Features

As with most products, there are different kinds of gloves on the market, with many different brands and features to choose from. They can be made from different materials, with leather being the most comfortable and durable, but also the most expensive. Synthetic gloves can be good, however, when it is hot or raining, so you may prefer to have both types to hand so that you’ve something suitable for every weather. No matter what the weather, you will find that your hand sweats a lot during the course of a game. Look for gloves that have ventilation to allow your hand to breathe, and this will make it more comfortable too.

Get the Right Retailer

Here at LeSports, we cater specifically for women with all kinds of ladies’ golf wear. We stock all the best brands, combined with excellent customer service, and we acquire new styles and brands all the time.

Bad Weather Golf Clothing for Women

We’re no stranger to rain in this country and real golf lovers will go out and enjoy a game no matter what the weather. Nonetheless, it is important to equip yourself with appropriate women’s golf clothing for those days when the weather isn’t so great, and by having the right clothes you’ll find that you can still enjoy the game whatever the weather’s doing. Here are some of the items you’ll need.

Waterproof Shoes

When playing a round of golf, you spend a lot of time walking and standing around. If the ground is wet, your feet will get wet, which will make you feel extremely uncomfortable and could even bring on a cold – unless you’re wearing a quality pair of waterproof golf shoes that is. Although they cost a little more than the non-waterproof version, our waterproof range of ladies’ Adidas golf shoes will be an investment well worth the money. They are available in several different styles and colours, including the super stylish white with sky blue stripes Signature Natalie shoes, as worn by LPGA Tour Professional Natalie Gulbis.

Waterproof Jackets

We have ladies’ golf jackets for all weather types, including windproof, waterproof and fleece and bodywarmer jackets. It is really important to keep your upper body warm and dry while playing golf, and so a waterproof jacket is a really sound investment. Look for a jacket that provides some insulation as well as shelter from the rain, although bear in mind that we get rain in warm weather too, so also look for one that wicks away moisture to keep you cool on those warm days too. Ideally, your jacket should be light and thin enough for you to be able to fold it up and keep it in your golf bag so that you’ll always have it with you for when the weather takes you by surprise!

Wind and Waterproof Trousers

Of course, you need to protect your lower half too when the bad weather hits. Look for trousers that are both waterproof and windproof, as well as providing breathability. Choose trousers which are right for your leg length so that they aren’t too long and soak up water from the ground, but also so that they aren’t too short and expose your ankles. Our Green Lamb Ladies’ Seam Sealed black waterproof golf trousers are available in different leg lengths.

Gloves and a Hat

It’s not just rain and wind you have to fear in this country! We experience cold temperatures during all seasons and an exposed golf course is one of the worst places for feeling them. However, if you wrap up with suitable clothing and add in a warm pair of gloves and a hat, you won’t have anything to worry about. Gloves are especially important because a weak grip can really affect your game, and wet weather makes your grip even worse. You may also want a hat during hot weather, to shield your vision and protect you from burning and overheating.

How Your Golf Clothing Affects Your Game

The clothes you choose won’t instantly propel you into professional level status or slash your handicap in half, but it must be said that wearing the right ladies’ golf clothes can help to improve your game. Here are some of the ways that your clothes can change the way you play.

Adapt to the Climate

You will be able to find golf clothes to suit every climate, so it is important that you cater for all seasons when shopping for golf clothes. Many clubs and greens will only allow their users to wear specific golf clothes, or will have rules or guidelines concerning what you are allowed to wear, so you can’t just throw on any old thing if the weather isn’t as you expect. Having the right clothes, such as a ladies’ waterproof golf jacket or a sun visor, will make your game much more comfortable and will give you the confidence to improve your game.

Allow for Movement

Many people think of golf as a slow sport. While it doesn’t have the fast-paced action of football or athletics, this doesn’t mean that there is no movement required. Your clothes should allow you to move freely so that you can properly execute your swing. Ladies’ golf skorts are perfect for this because your legs have free movement and there is stretch in the material which aids with this. Also look for tops, trousers and jackets which are lightweight and stretchy, and avoid going for clothes which are too big, as they could end up rubbing you or getting in the way.

Provide a Good Grip

Your golf shoes will be one of the most crucial items in your wardrobe when it comes to your game. Golf shoes typically have cleats or spikes (or a good grip sole) which allow you to firmly plant your feet and remain stable throughout your swing. Good shoes also help to keep you comfortable while walking around on the different terrains of the course, preventing you from slipping on slopes. Dress-style shoes will provide you with more support and structure, while athletic styles will give optimum comfort.

Another essential item when it comes to grip is the golf glove. Golfers typically wear just one glove on their lead hand (the hand at the top when you swing) and this helps to maintain a firm grip on the club, particularly in wet conditions or when your hand is sweating. Leather gloves will provide the best grip, while synthetic gloves are more breathable and better for hot weather conditions.

Allow Clear Vision

On hot sunny days, the golf course is extremely exposed and it can be hard to see against the glare of the sun. Get yourself a summer hat or sun visor to give yourself a clear view of the course. A hat will also help to keep you cool by keeping the sun off your head while you’re playing or waiting, which again will make you feel more comfortable and in turn improve your game.

Why quality golf shoes are so important

If you’re just starting to get into golf and are wondering which products you should invest in first, shoes should be somewhere near the top of your list. The footwear you use while you’re out on the course can have a massive impact on your performance and your enjoyment.

Bear in mind that your feet come under lots of strain when you’re pacing the fairways and taking your shots.

Pitfalls

If you don’t have the right ladies’ golf shoes you can run into all sorts of problems. For example, badly made shoes can fail to offer protection from the elements. There’s nothing worse than trying to focus on your game while your socks are soaking wet.

Also, poor quality footwear might not provide you with the grip you need to feel secure and stable making your drives and taking other shots.

Then there’s comfort to consider. If the products you use aren’t the right shape or size, they’re more likely to cause blisters and other problems. These can be painful and bring your game to a halt.

An impressive range

Here at LeSports we offer an impressive selection of women’s golf shoes and should have just what you’re after. Our range starts from just £29.99, meaning you won’t have to spend a fortune to get your hands on top-quality footwear.

It’s also worth noting that we offer free delivery and you don’t have to register in order to make the most of our superb deals.

Take your pick

Maybe the Hi-Tec Ladies Covent Gardens Golf Shoes in white and stone would make the perfect addition to your golfing outfits. These classy shoes feature a Dri-Tec waterproof membrane, soft textile lining for added comfort and a wax lace. They also have a medial roll bar, allowing your left foot to roll more easily on the back swing and your right toe to roll as you follow through.

Another great option is the Adidas Ladies Driver Prima Golf Shoe in cream. This comes with TRAXION Technology to provide maximum grip and stability. If you have a high swing speed, these products could be perfect for you.  They also sport moulded foam to contour the foot and a durable adiWEAR rubber outsole.

If you’re more of a Nike fan, perhaps the firm’s Ladies Course Air Accel Golf Shoes will take your fancy. They are 100 per cent waterproof thanks to their leather upper with a Watershield waterproof membrane. They also benefit from an airliner sockliner and the world’s fastest cleat changing system.

Wear them in

It’s important to bear in mind that, like lots of other shoes, golfing footwear needs to be worn in. To begin with, you might benefit from using an extra pair of socks and it’s wise to take some plasters onto the course just in case they rub your feet. After you’ve used them a couple of times though, they should be perfect, and you’ll get many years of use out of them.

Dealing with unpredictable weather on the course

OK, so summer may finally have arrived here in the UK, but let’s face it, the weather’s still far from predictable. One moment, you might be stood in sweltering heat on the golf course, while the next you’re running for cover from lashing rain.

Getting a round in under conditions like this can be tricky, but you shouldn’t let it put you off. If you waited for guaranteed good weather, you’d hardly get out on the fairways at all!

Layering

The trick to any good golf outfit is layering. There are so many ladies’ golf clothes available these days and you won’t struggle to find exactly what you’re after. Being able to add to or remove items from your ensemble means you’ll be able to stay comfortable no matter what the weather does.

Slipovers

For example, over the top of your T-shirt, it’s handy to wear a slipover. If a chilly breeze picks up or the sky clouds over, you can simply reach for this item and hey presto, you’ll be nice and warm again.

The Ashworth Ladies Sleeveless Pullover Sweater in Frenchblu is well worth a look. This luxurious, soft garment stretches to allow for maximum freedom of movement. It features a cuffed neck, hem and shoulders and it looks great both on and off the course.

Don’t forget your jacket!

Even if it’s nice and sunny when you set off to play golf, make sure you take your jacket with you. At the time, this might seem over the top, but summer jackets are easy to carry around and you’ll be pleased you have it if the heavens open.

If you’re on the lookout for a stylish new coat, perhaps the Sunice Typhoon Felicity Ladies Waterproof Golf Jacket would be ideal. This is waterproof, breathable, featherweight and windproof. It’s also stretchable, meaning it won’t restrict your swing.

Eye protection

For those occasions when the sun is out, eye protection is crucial. Having a cap or visor in your bag is always a good idea, and you might want to take some sunglasses too.

The Green Lamb Ladies Golf Visor is a great product to have and it’s available in white and blue.

General tips

As well as layering up on the golf course, it’s important to carry some sunscreen and water with you while you’re out and about. If the temperature suddenly climbs while you’re on the course, you can quickly find yourself dehydrated and sunburnt, which is a sure fire way to ruin your fun.

Meanwhile, if you hear thunder and it seems to be getting closer to you, make sure you leave the course ASAP. When it comes to lightning and golf courses, you don’t want to take any chances. You can always sit in the car for a while and wait until the storm passes, or just head to the clubhouse and enjoy a well-earned drink.

Improve Performance With Ladies Golf Accessories

Gloves For Style And Protection

It is no secret that handling a golf club for hours can take its toll on the hand both through swinging and simply being exposed to the elements. Bare hands can however provide unrivalled grip as well as receiving a significant amount of information about each swing, but the flipside of this is that even the best clubs can lead to blistering which is made all the worse by cold, windy conditions as well as rain. All of this adds up to a big problem for those serious golfers since we all know how much the quality of your grip matters. Fortunately we have a range of ladies golf gloves which will protect your hands and keep you looking stylish across each and every hole.

Whether you are looking for either a right or left hand ladies golf glove, our Fleece Handwarmer Mittens from Daily Sports are more than up to the task typically fitting on your non-dominant hand. You can however buy both if you feel you need that extra protection and how you deploy them is really up to you. The elasticated wrist ensures that the one size fits all sizing really does fit all comfortably. The gloves are available in black, pink and navy.

Golf Socks

Golf socks are often overlooked but they do provide a vital job of keeping your feet comfortable as you make each swing. We have a wide range in both neutral and more feminine looks with each golf sock designed to cushion the feet and prevent rubbing. Many of them are designed to absorb moisture as well, such as the Ashworth Ladies Golf Socks. These have a deep welt for added comfort but it is with the moisture wicking fabric that the socks really come into their own performing admirably in higher temperatures as well as those more moist environments.

Headwear For Maximum Vision

Another aspect of ladies golf wear that can have a real impact on game performance is headwear. There is nothing as irritating as a low setting sun to put you off a drive, so investing in some highly affordable and great looking headwear can make all of the difference. We have a wide range including those by Nike, Adidas, Green Lamb, Catmandoo and others. Each fulfill a different role with visors perhaps being the best designs for those summer months. The Green Lamb Ladies Stud Golf VIsor is adjustable and light on the head so it won’t create extra heat. The Terry towelling provides even more comfort and will block out the sun on those all important strokes.

Alternatively, if you are looking for something to keep the rain off the Catmandoo Waterproof Bucket Hat is one of the best options. A freak shower can cause all sorts of trouble, but with a bucket hat, the rain should drip off the ends not affecting your vision. The Fila Vintage Winter Beanie Skull Hats are some of the best for keeping you warm during those colder, windswept sessions.

Golf Clothing Through the Ages

Golfing clothes have a practical purpose, protecting the player from the elements while on the open golf course and enhancing performance. However, there is also a strong fashion element involved in golf fashion. After all, why else would we see such loud trousers and bright Argyle jumpers dotted around the course? At the British Golf Museum in Fife, Scotland, you can explore golf fashions through the ages with their collection: Fashioning an Identity: The Role Clothing Plays in Golf.

Golf fashions were first noticed in the 18th century, when players wanted to stand out on the golf course, and also in society. Playing golf was an indication of a certain stature, and so distinctive clothes were worn to allow golfers to be clearly recognisable when not on the course. Much like in tennis, golf clubs had specific dress codes that they required their players to wear, and the variety and flexibility we see today was certainly not so prevalent. In fact, with their formal red jackets, golfing outfits were more or less a uniform, and golf club members could be fined for not wearing it. You may well see these red jackets still worn today at ceremonial occasions as a link to former times.

Traditional golfing clothes also included kilts and animal skins, as worn by the original Scottish shepherds at the time when they invented the game.

During the 19th century, golfing clothes were very much decided by the players. For women, however, ladies’ golf clothes were still somewhat restrictive. They were required to wear corsets, ties and bonnets, with the focus being on style rather than practicality, performance or comfort. It wasn’t until the 20th century, however, that golf clothes gained a real distinction from the everyday wear of non-golfers. As modern fashions evolved into a standard casual dress of jeans and T-shirt, seeing golfers wearing plus fours tucked into pulled-up socks and badly-fitting jumpers really set them apart.

In the 20th century, golf wear became more casual, practical and comfortable for both sexes. In fact, one of the major revolutions for women’s golf fashion came in 1933, when Gloria Minoprio became the first female golfer to wear women’s golf trousers at a major championship. Clothing became very much focused on keeping the players warm, as well as making a statement, and so the formal jackets were abandoned in favour of V-neck jumpers. In the first half of the 20th century, brightly coloured socks and bow ties also became the norm for men, giving them a slightly comical appearance.

In the latter half of the 20th century, golfing fashion has become less comical, with full-length trousers now being worn over the socks. Nevertheless, that element of fun still remains through a greater amount of colour now available in golfing clothes. Professional male and female golfers also make sure the brand of their clothing is clearly displayed, such as easily distinguishable Adidas ladies’ golf shoes. Fashion designers have ensured that modern-day golf clothes are much more styled and well-cut, although some retro fashions appear to be making a comeback.

Your choice of stylish golf clothes

Finally, the weather’s starting to improve and you might be looking forward to getting plenty of rounds of golf in this spring and summer.
