Even on the golf course fashion is ever present, particularly for the growing number of women who are enjoying the game. And this year one question has been on many ladies’ lips, and consequently on the minds of ladies golf wear suppliers – shorts or skorts?
What is the secret of the skort’s success? Perhaps it lies in the combination of style and functionality that it provides. First developed by the Leon Levin clothing company in the 1960s as the ‘Q’ skirt, the skort offered women golfers the additional coverage and freedom of movement that came from wearing shorts, but with the look of a skirt.
Skorts can even be linked to the changing role of women in Western society during the 20th century, as they gave them more freedom to engage in outdoor activities that had previously been more commonly associated with the male of the species, such as gardening and sports.
Types of skort
With many professional female golfers sporting a skort on the links, their popularity has continued to soar. For ladies golf clothes retailers the choice is no longer whether or not to stock skorts, but what styles of skort they should offer their customers.
We’ve found that two particular types of skort are popular. The first type resemble a pair of shorts completely enveloped by a skirt, and these are generally favoured by customers who prefer the more traditional look of a skirt with the coverage that shorts provide. The other type also sells well, and instead has a flap of fabric at the front only over the shorts component.
Of course, while skorts are a favoured item of women’s golf clothing, they’re not just for golf, and you may find that sales are further propelled by those who utilise them for other sporting activities and outdoor chores.
