How to look good and feel comfortable on the green

Golf is a sport so well established that it even has little spin-offs; crazy golf, mini golf, pub golf … – it has its own clothes, clubhouses, large courses and more lingo than you can remember in one sitting.

It is, predominantly though, played outdoors and this makes it not only an enjoyable and dynamic sport but also a damp one, especially in the UK. When it comes to women’s golf clothes on the course, there’s a pretty wide range of shorts, skirts and trousers but where’s the warmth?

 Microfleece

Microfleece is a very soft synthetic material that is thin and flexible whilst still providing plenty of insulation and warmth. This means you can enjoy a full range of movement while you play and have an added layer of cosiness. There’s always a certain amount of standing around on a golf course, and even on a warm day with a light breeze you can start getting chilled. So having a lightweight fleece will take the weather off your mind and let you concentrate on your swing.

As a hydrophobic material it dries quickly and its breathability means it’s ideal for use in sports and will help keep your muscles warm, even during periods of inactivity. Because it’s synthetic, it’s easy to wash and quick drying, unlike real wool which requires lengthy hand washing.

Thermals

Thermals are an old favourite for the outdoor enthusiast, and a thermal base layer will get you a long way in cold weather. Why should you hang up your clubs for six months just because there’s a chill in the air? A thermal base layer is worn under all other clothes and will keep warm air close to your skin.

Choose a base layer that will keep your midriff covered too, as this is prime place to get cold. Base layers are a great way to stay warm in wintery weather and will aid your playing; the colder you are, the tenser you’ll be and the harder it will be to concentrate. With a high quality thermal top, you won’t even notice you’re wearing it and it’ll keep you blissfully toasty.

Warm weather ladies’ golf wear

But what about the other end of the spectrum? Wrapping up and wearing layers in the winter is easy, but what about the warmer months? Choosing a fabric that can keep you cool when it’s hot is just as important as finding a fleece that will keep you warm when it’s cold. There is a wide range of ladies’ golf wear available that has hot weather properties such as excellent UV protection (the sun can still damage you through clothes!) and crucial ventilation.

Being too hot on the course can be distracting, frustrating and can ruin your game so make sure you’re prepared. Wicking material is important in a top for hot weather and a thermal top because it wicks sweat away from your body, keeping you dry and at the right temperature.

Win that game

So that’s practicality out of the way; once you’ve got the clothes that will keep you calm and collected rather than shivering or flustered, then you can truly focus on your game. When you’re comfortable in your clothes then you’ll always look fantastic and when choosing golf clothes, remember, weather changes and being prepared will improve your day no end, right through to the final tee.

Are skorts a must-have item of ladies golf wear?

Even on the golf course fashion is ever present, particularly for the growing number of women who are enjoying the game. And this year one question has been on many ladies’ lips, and consequently on the minds of ladies golf wear suppliers – shorts or skorts?

What is the secret of the skort’s success? Perhaps it lies in the combination of style and functionality that it provides. First developed by the Leon Levin clothing company in the 1960s as the ‘Q’ skirt, the skort offered women golfers the additional coverage and freedom of movement that came from wearing shorts, but with the look of a skirt.

Skorts can even be linked to the changing role of women in Western society during the 20th century, as they gave them more freedom to engage in outdoor activities that had previously been more commonly associated with the male of the species, such as gardening and sports.

Types of skort

With many professional female golfers sporting a skort on the links, their popularity has continued to soar. For ladies golf clothes retailers the choice is no longer whether or not to stock skorts, but what styles of skort they should offer their customers.

We’ve found that two particular types of skort are popular. The first type resemble a pair of shorts completely enveloped by a skirt, and these are generally favoured by customers who prefer the more traditional look of a skirt with the coverage that shorts provide. The other type also sells well, and instead has a flap of fabric at the front only over the shorts component.

Of course, while skorts are a favoured item of women’s golf clothing, they’re not just for golf, and you may find that sales are further propelled by those who utilise them for other sporting activities and outdoor chores.

Inbee Park doing her bit for female golf

In the past, golf was a largely male preserve, but these days women are taking to the fairways and greens in their droves.

Reflecting this fact, there is now plenty of superb quality women’s golf clothing available. Here at LeSports we offer an impressive selection of garments and accessories, and should have everything you need.

A big hitter

One woman who’s doing her bit to further the sport for women is South Korea’s Inbee Park. According to an article in the Independent, the expert is the Tiger Woods of the women’s game. Recently, she showed her skills at the Ricoh Women’s British Open Championship at Muirfield, Scotland.

She was aiming to become the first player to win four consecutive majors in the same season. She had already taken the top spot in the Kraft Nabisco, LPGA Championship and US Women’s Open.

World number one

Unfortunately for Park, she didn’t succeed, but this didn’t seem to faze her. The 25-year-old remains the world number one and plans to have many successes in the future, the Scotsman reports. Talking after the event, she stated: “I might not have won this week, but I’ve learned a lot and know I’ve still got a lot of room to improve.”

She added: “I’m glad that the tournament is over after going through four rounds under such pressure. I’ve done something amazing this season by winning three in a row and I don’t even know if I can do that again. It might take a long time for that record to be beat. And, unless I win four majors in a row, I’ll always remember this moment. It’s something I’ve never experienced before and, though it’s tough to be the centre of everything and I feel exhausted, it’s been a great experience. I’ve never had this many people rooting for me. That has been the favourite part.”

Meanwhile, commenting on the UK weather, she added: “Mother Nature has to be on your side in the British Open. It didn’t happen for me this year – but I have a lot of more years to go.”

Feeling inspired?

If you’re feeling inspired by the achievements of professionals like Park, and by the rising profile of women’s golf more generally, now might be a great time to stock up on some new golf clothes. After all, when you’re out and about on the course, it’s important that you look and feel the part.

Luckily, getting your hands on the perfect garments and accessories is now easier than ever. By taking a look around our website, you should be able to find everything you want. From ladies’ golf waterproof jackets to ladies’ golf socks we sell it all.

Temperatures are falling

With autumn already upon us, it might be a good idea to stock up on some wintry clothes to protect you from the cold and damp over coming months. By making sure you’ve got suitable outfits on when you step onto the course, you should be able to enjoy golf in all seasons.

Top golfing tips

Golf isn’t something you can pick up in a summer, or even in a number of summers. It’s the sort of sport that can take a lifetime to perfect.

To help ensure you’re able to do yourself justice out there on the fairways and greens, it’s important that you have the right women’s golf clothes. Here at LeSports we offer an impressive selection of products and should have everything you need to help ensure you look and feel great on the course.

Also, you might benefit from taking on board some expert hints and tips. There is plenty of advice out there on the web for you to take advantage of.

Swing through the ball

For example, writing on Golf Digest, golf teacher Karen Palacios-Jansen highlighted the importance of swinging through and not to the ball. About this, she said: “Most slow-swinging amateurs slap at the ball or try to scoop it up into the air, which causes the club head to slow down through impact. There’s no gradual build-up of speed, which is a defining trait of good tempo.

“To learn how to accelerate the club through impact to a full, balanced finish, practice swinging with your head cover on your driver. The additional resistance on the club head will force you to drive it through impact into a full finish, and will teach you how to use tempo to generate more speed and power.”

Rotate

Meanwhile, also offering advice, fellow teacher Cheryl Anderson stated that players need to shift their weight. According to the expert, to gain more distance, it is important to rotate the body’s core through the shot so that it finishes on the left side.

On this topic, the specialist remarked: “You want your thighs to finish close together – you should be able to hold a sheet of paper between them – and your lower legs to form a small, inverted V from the knees down. If the V is larger or there’s a gap between your knees, your weight is not on your left side. Most likely, you’re hanging back on your right foot, which causes the club to bottom out early and hit the ball fat or thin. Reduce the size of the V, and you’ll improve your balance and gain distance.”

Sweep it

Ms Anderson also recommended sweeping the ball off the tee rather than hitting down on it. This, she said, helps players to achieve the maximum distance from their tee shots.

How Your Golf Clothing Affects Your Game

The clothes you choose won’t instantly propel you into professional level status or slash your handicap in half, but it must be said that wearing the right ladies’ golf clothes can help to improve your game. Here are some of the ways that your clothes can change the way you play.

Adapt to the Climate

You will be able to find golf clothes to suit every climate, so it is important that you cater for all seasons when shopping for golf clothes. Many clubs and greens will only allow their users to wear specific golf clothes, or will have rules or guidelines concerning what you are allowed to wear, so you can’t just throw on any old thing if the weather isn’t as you expect. Having the right clothes, such as a ladies’ waterproof golf jacket or a sun visor, will make your game much more comfortable and will give you the confidence to improve your game.

Allow for Movement

Many people think of golf as a slow sport. While it doesn’t have the fast-paced action of football or athletics, this doesn’t mean that there is no movement required. Your clothes should allow you to move freely so that you can properly execute your swing. Ladies’ golf skorts are perfect for this because your legs have free movement and there is stretch in the material which aids with this. Also look for tops, trousers and jackets which are lightweight and stretchy, and avoid going for clothes which are too big, as they could end up rubbing you or getting in the way.

Provide a Good Grip

Your golf shoes will be one of the most crucial items in your wardrobe when it comes to your game. Golf shoes typically have cleats or spikes (or a good grip sole) which allow you to firmly plant your feet and remain stable throughout your swing. Good shoes also help to keep you comfortable while walking around on the different terrains of the course, preventing you from slipping on slopes. Dress-style shoes will provide you with more support and structure, while athletic styles will give optimum comfort.

Another essential item when it comes to grip is the golf glove. Golfers typically wear just one glove on their lead hand (the hand at the top when you swing) and this helps to maintain a firm grip on the club, particularly in wet conditions or when your hand is sweating. Leather gloves will provide the best grip, while synthetic gloves are more breathable and better for hot weather conditions.

Allow Clear Vision

On hot sunny days, the golf course is extremely exposed and it can be hard to see against the glare of the sun. Get yourself a summer hat or sun visor to give yourself a clear view of the course. A hat will also help to keep you cool by keeping the sun off your head while you’re playing or waiting, which again will make you feel more comfortable and in turn improve your game.

Get a grip

Getting to grips with the game of golf can be tricky and one of the first things you’ll need to focus on is, well, your grip. If you don’t nail this, you’ll struggle with every other element of your game. Luckily, it’s now easy to get all the hints and tips you need online.

Before you next don your women’s golf clothes and head out to test your skills on the course, you might benefit from taking some extra information onboard.

Getting the basics right

Commenting on the importance of a decent grip, a BBC Sport article noted that it’s “a good idea to get the basics right”. It remarked: “Learning to hold the golf club correctly is one of the most important things you can do to be a good golfer.”

Top hand

Whichever style of grip you use, the procedure for getting hold of the club is the same. When it comes to your top hand, you should let your arms hang naturally. Then place your palms on either side of the grip so they are facing each other. It’s important to keep your hands relaxed, especially if you’re trying to hit the ball a long way. The BBC noted that top players grip the club lightly in their fingers rather than in their palms.

The first step is to lay the grip of the club diagonally across the palm of the top hand. If you’re playing right handed, this will be your left hand. The grip should be nestled in the crease where the fingers meet the palm. Many players also extend their index finger down the grip slightly.

Then close your fingers around the grip and feel the the club resting against the fleshy pad in the palm of your hand. It helps if you curl your forefinger last.

The article noted that you should be able to see two or three knuckles on the back of your left hand and your thumb should extend straight down the grip, slightly to the left of centre. Meanwhile, the tips of your fingers should just touch the base of your palm.

Bottom hand

You can then bring your right hand onto the club, with the palm facing the target. Close your fingers around the grip and as you lock your fingers into place, your forefinger should form a ‘trigger’ shape, rather than wrapping all the way around like your other fingers.

The V formed by the thumb and forefinger on your hand should point up to your right shoulder and as you look down, you should be able to see two knuckles on each hand.

Lessons

If you don’t feel confident hitting the ball, you can always invest in some lessons. If you shop around for a good deal, this needn’t cost that much and it can really bring your game on.

For example, maybe our Cutter & Buck Annika Drytec Ladies Golf Polo in black will take your fancy. This boasts Drytec technology, which helps to wick away moisture and keep you cool.

Shelter from the sun

A sunny day may be a rare treat in Britain, but it’s important to protect yourself from the glare of the solar rays when you’re on the course. This is where hats come in handy. You can complement any summer outfit perfectly with a Daily Sports Ladies Paper Straw Hat and it comes in white and pink.

Whether you choose to take the hat off to take your shots or keep it on, this product can stop you burning and protect your eyes.

It’s also important to use plenty of sunscreen and, if you’re planning to stay out on the course for a long time, take the bottle so you can keep topping yourself up. Even under thin cloud, you can turn an unhealthy shade of pink if you’re not careful.

Why quality golf shoes are so important

If you’re just starting to get into golf and are wondering which products you should invest in first, shoes should be somewhere near the top of your list. The footwear you use while you’re out on the course can have a massive impact on your performance and your enjoyment.

Bear in mind that your feet come under lots of strain when you’re pacing the fairways and taking your shots.

Pitfalls

If you don’t have the right ladies’ golf shoes you can run into all sorts of problems. For example, badly made shoes can fail to offer protection from the elements. There’s nothing worse than trying to focus on your game while your socks are soaking wet.

Also, poor quality footwear might not provide you with the grip you need to feel secure and stable making your drives and taking other shots.

Then there’s comfort to consider. If the products you use aren’t the right shape or size, they’re more likely to cause blisters and other problems. These can be painful and bring your game to a halt.

An impressive range

Here at LeSports we offer an impressive selection of women’s golf shoes and should have just what you’re after. Our range starts from just £29.99, meaning you won’t have to spend a fortune to get your hands on top-quality footwear.

It’s also worth noting that we offer free delivery and you don’t have to register in order to make the most of our superb deals.

Take your pick

Maybe the Hi-Tec Ladies Covent Gardens Golf Shoes in white and stone would make the perfect addition to your golfing outfits. These classy shoes feature a Dri-Tec waterproof membrane, soft textile lining for added comfort and a wax lace. They also have a medial roll bar, allowing your left foot to roll more easily on the back swing and your right toe to roll as you follow through.

Another great option is the Adidas Ladies Driver Prima Golf Shoe in cream. This comes with TRAXION Technology to provide maximum grip and stability. If you have a high swing speed, these products could be perfect for you.  They also sport moulded foam to contour the foot and a durable adiWEAR rubber outsole.

They are 100 per cent waterproof thanks to their leather upper with a Watershield waterproof membrane. They also benefit from an airliner sockliner and the world’s fastest cleat changing system.

Wear them in

It’s important to bear in mind that, like lots of other shoes, golfing footwear needs to be worn in. To begin with, you might benefit from using an extra pair of socks and it’s wise to take some plasters onto the course just in case they rub your feet. After you’ve used them a couple of times though, they should be perfect, and you’ll get many years of use out of them.

Dealing with unpredictable weather on the course

OK, so summer may finally have arrived here in the UK, but let’s face it, the weather’s still far from predictable. One moment, you might be stood in sweltering heat on the golf course, while the next you’re running for cover from lashing rain.

Getting a round in under conditions like this can be tricky, but you shouldn’t let it put you off. If you waited for guaranteed good weather, you’d hardly get out on the fairways at all!

Layering

The trick to any good golf outfit is layering. There are so many ladies’ golf clothes available these days and you won’t struggle to find exactly what you’re after. Being able to add to or remove items from your ensemble means you’ll be able to stay comfortable no matter what the weather does.

Slipovers

For example, over the top of your T-shirt, it’s handy to wear a slipover. If a chilly breeze picks up or the sky clouds over, you can simply reach for this item and hey presto, you’ll be nice and warm again.

The Ashworth Ladies Sleeveless Pullover Sweater in Frenchblu is well worth a look. This luxurious, soft garment stretches to allow for maximum freedom of movement. It features a cuffed neck, hem and shoulders and it looks great both on and off the course.

Don’t forget your jacket!

Even if it’s nice and sunny when you set off to play golf, make sure you take your jacket with you. At the time, this might seem over the top, but summer jackets are easy to carry around and you’ll be pleased you have it if the heavens open.

If you’re on the lookout for a stylish new coat, perhaps the Sunice Typhoon Felicity Ladies Waterproof Golf Jacket would be ideal. This is waterproof, breathable, featherweight and windproof. It’s also stretchable, meaning it won’t restrict your swing.

Eye protection

For those occasions when the sun is out, eye protection is crucial. Having a cap or visor in your bag is always a good idea, and you might want to take some sunglasses too.

The Green Lamb Ladies Golf Visor is a great product to have and it’s available in white and blue.

General tips

As well as layering up on the golf course, it’s important to carry some sunscreen and water with you while you’re out and about. If the temperature suddenly climbs while you’re on the course, you can quickly find yourself dehydrated and sunburnt, which is a sure fire way to ruin your fun.

Meanwhile, if you hear thunder and it seems to be getting closer to you, make sure you leave the course ASAP. When it comes to lightning and golf courses, you don’t want to take any chances. You can always sit in the car for a while and wait until the storm passes, or just head to the clubhouse and enjoy a well-earned drink.

Up To Par With Golf Shoes

Putting together your golfing ensemble doesn’t have to be a chore – in fact, with LeSports it can be part of the pleasurable experience of a classic game. To beginners a lot of golfing equipment can seem unnecessary but it is only through experience that you learn why the equipment is designed as it is. Nowhere is this more important than with golf shoes.  Specialised shoes come with spikes attached to the sole which can either be made of plastic soft spikes or harder metal ones. These will increase your traction to the ground providing you with a firmer base on which to make your swing. It will improve your balance and will help to mitigate the effects of the weather and ground underfoot, providing better grip on looser, perhaps wetter grass. It is always important however to take note of where you are going to be playing golf. While many golf shoes have spikes, the golf club itself might have already banned their use. Of course, manufacturers have responded by making spikes less protruding, but it is always best to ensure the shoes you are buying can be used at your local club.

Our Offerings

There are many different types of manufacturers when it comes to womens golf clothing and the selections are increasing all of the time. One of the longest standing manufacturers is however Adidas who produce some fantastic looking and performing options. One of our most popular options is the Adidas Ladies Waterproof Driver May Z in white. These shoes are 100% waterproof making them the perfect footwear when those flash showers occur during play. While the sole does have spikes of a sort, these are not too invasive and will not prove to be damaging to the course you are playing on. The TRAXION™ outsole provides grip in many different types of weather conditions but also have a deal of give allowing better freedom of movement.  Another stylish example of Adidas ladies golf shoes are the Driver Lace in black. These shoes benefit from a microfiber synthetic leather upper making them exceptionally light yet still very durable. As far as movement goes, the FlexFoam insole provides support but is not overly constricting. The 6 spike benefits from THINTECH™ technology to ensure traction is at its height but your swing will remain uninhibited. If you are looking for some shoes for summer, then the Adidas Womens Slingback 2.0 shoes or similar are a wise option since these provide maximum ventilation.
