How to look good and feel comfortable on the green

Golf is a sport so well established that it even has little spin-offs; crazy golf, mini golf, pub golf … – it has its own clothes, clubhouses, large courses and more lingo than you can remember in one sitting.

It is, predominantly though, played outdoors and this makes it not only an enjoyable and dynamic sport but also a damp one, especially in the UK. When it comes to women’s golf clothes on the course, there’s a pretty wide range of shorts, skirts and trousers but where’s the warmth?

 Microfleece

Microfleece is a very soft synthetic material that is thin and flexible whilst still providing plenty of insulation and warmth. This means you can enjoy a full range of movement while you play and have an added layer of cosiness. There’s always a certain amount of standing around on a golf course, and even on a warm day with a light breeze you can start getting chilled. So having a lightweight fleece will take the weather off your mind and let you concentrate on your swing.

As a hydrophobic material it dries quickly and its breathability means it’s ideal for use in sports and will help keep your muscles warm, even during periods of inactivity. Because it’s synthetic, it’s easy to wash and quick drying, unlike real wool which requires lengthy hand washing.

Thermals

Thermals are an old favourite for the outdoor enthusiast, and a thermal base layer will get you a long way in cold weather. Why should you hang up your clubs for six months just because there’s a chill in the air? A thermal base layer is worn under all other clothes and will keep warm air close to your skin.

Choose a base layer that will keep your midriff covered too, as this is prime place to get cold. Base layers are a great way to stay warm in wintery weather and will aid your playing; the colder you are, the tenser you’ll be and the harder it will be to concentrate. With a high quality thermal top, you won’t even notice you’re wearing it and it’ll keep you blissfully toasty.

Warm weather ladies’ golf wear

But what about the other end of the spectrum? Wrapping up and wearing layers in the winter is easy, but what about the warmer months? Choosing a fabric that can keep you cool when it’s hot is just as important as finding a fleece that will keep you warm when it’s cold. There is a wide range of ladies’ golf wear available that has hot weather properties such as excellent UV protection (the sun can still damage you through clothes!) and crucial ventilation.

Being too hot on the course can be distracting, frustrating and can ruin your game so make sure you’re prepared. Wicking material is important in a top for hot weather and a thermal top because it wicks sweat away from your body, keeping you dry and at the right temperature.

Win that game

So that’s practicality out of the way; once you’ve got the clothes that will keep you calm and collected rather than shivering or flustered, then you can truly focus on your game. When you’re comfortable in your clothes then you’ll always look fantastic and when choosing golf clothes, remember, weather changes and being prepared will improve your day no end, right through to the final tee.

The right golf clothing can help you concentrate

Being able to concentrate is a must on the golf course. Even tiny distractions can affect your game and turn what would have been superb shots into disastrous mistakes. This is why the ladies’ golf clothes you choose are so important.

You should tailor your outfits to suit the precise conditions of the time of year and the day itself. This can help you to improve your game and enable you to get more enjoyment from the sport.

A low sun

One big problem for golfers as autumn begins to set in is the low sun. This is at its worst in mid-December, but well before and after this point, the position of the sun can have a big impact on players.

If you’re determined not to be phased by this glowing ball out there in space, it may be time to invest in some suitable headwear. Here at LeSports we sell a selection of ladies’ golf visors, including Fila Retro Sports Golf Visor Cap. This can help to keep the sun out of your eyes and it has the added advantage of keeping your head and ears warm, which is important as colder conditions set in.

You might also want to take your sunglasses with you to help protect your eyes.

Numb hands can ruin your fun

Golf is a game of patience and there is plenty of standing around involved. During the summer, you can simply bask in the warm solar rays. However, when it’s colder, you might struggle to keep your hands warm.

Cold mitts are a big no no on the golf course. It’s impossible to play controlled shots when you can’t feel your clubs properly. Also, cold hands can be painful.

This is where golf gloves come into their own and the Daily Sports Ladies Golf Fleece Handwarmer Mittens are well worth a look. These items have a microfibre quilted outer layer and a chequerboard finish palm for added grip.

Protect your feet

Your feet have to work hard when you’re out and about on the golf course, so it’s only fair that you treat them well. There are few things more distracting when you’re trying to take the perfect shot than having cold, wet feet.

We sell an impressive range of ladies’ golf shoes and should have the perfect versions for you. For example, perhaps our Adidas Ladies GolfLite 3 Z Waterproof Golf Shoes in black would be ideal. They are 100 per cent waterproof, meaning you won’t have to worry on rainy or snowy days.

It’s also a good idea to wear a pair of thick socks under your shoes to help keep your feet nice and toasty.

Easy as that

The good news is, ordering items from our website is quick and simple. All you need are a spare few moments and an internet connection. By making sure you’re well equipped for a range of conditions on the golf course, you should be able to enjoy virtually year-round action on the fairways and greens.

Get a grip

Getting to grips with the game of golf can be tricky and one of the first things you’ll need to focus on is, well, your grip. If you don’t nail this, you’ll struggle with every other element of your game. Luckily, it’s now easy to get all the hints and tips you need online.

Before you next don your women’s golf clothes and head out to test your skills on the course, you might benefit from taking some extra information onboard.

Getting the basics right

Commenting on the importance of a decent grip, a BBC Sport article noted that it’s “a good idea to get the basics right”. It remarked: “Learning to hold the golf club correctly is one of the most important things you can do to be a good golfer.”

Top hand

Whichever style of grip you use, the procedure for getting hold of the club is the same. When it comes to your top hand, you should let your arms hang naturally. Then place your palms on either side of the grip so they are facing each other. It’s important to keep your hands relaxed, especially if you’re trying to hit the ball a long way. The BBC noted that top players grip the club lightly in their fingers rather than in their palms.

The first step is to lay the grip of the club diagonally across the palm of the top hand. If you’re playing right handed, this will be your left hand. The grip should be nestled in the crease where the fingers meet the palm. Many players also extend their index finger down the grip slightly.

Then close your fingers around the grip and feel the the club resting against the fleshy pad in the palm of your hand. It helps if you curl your forefinger last.

The article noted that you should be able to see two or three knuckles on the back of your left hand and your thumb should extend straight down the grip, slightly to the left of centre. Meanwhile, the tips of your fingers should just touch the base of your palm.

Bottom hand

You can then bring your right hand onto the club, with the palm facing the target. Close your fingers around the grip and as you lock your fingers into place, your forefinger should form a ‘trigger’ shape, rather than wrapping all the way around like your other fingers.

The V formed by the thumb and forefinger on your hand should point up to your right shoulder and as you look down, you should be able to see two knuckles on each hand.

Lessons

If you don’t feel confident hitting the ball, you can always invest in some lessons. If you shop around for a good deal, this needn’t cost that much and it can really bring your game on.

Show Great Form With Ladies Golf Trousers

Ladies golf trousers present a unique challenge for designers who naturally want to manufacture trousers that facilitate your game, but neither look bad nor detract from your look. It is a tricky balance to get right, but at LeSports we have chosen some of the best offerings from well known and proven manufacturers. The Adidas Climalite range builds in technology to help maintain a consistent temperature levels so they aren’t overly stifling or causing you to sweat. They have a flat front and are constructed from 100% polyester to ensure that there is at least some give but not so much that the pants move out of position. It is important to maintain form, but giving too much can make the pants cumbersome in themselves. With two front and back patch pockets you will have some convenient storage space if you don’t want to be carrying a bag around as well as your clubs while the contoured waistband has loops for a belt if you want that extra bit of support.

Ashworth have their own take on ladies golf trousers UK, with some highly affordable options that build in some more substantial pockets. Critically, where they differ is in the materials with these being made from 97% cotton and 3% spandex which will add that stretchiness while not being so moveable that you’ll be readjusting your pants after each stroke. Again, they are dignified in terms of design and very comfortable to wear for long periods. They are slightly more form fitting than the Adidas options which makes them great on windy courses. If however you are determined to invest in some pants that are as form fitting as possible then you might consider the Adidas ProDRY Plus. These are cut to the contours of your legs and are made from polyester giving them a coolness perfect for those hotter courses. They are however very easy to move in and will perform admirably on a very windy course. The material will also help to deflect some of the wind as well.

Perhaps the stretchiest and most convenient pants for storage are the Green Lamb Needlecord Pants. These have 4% of spandex while the rest is made from cotton and sport 2 zip front pockets and 2 back pockets for the storage of tees and scorecards. The extra spandex might suit some players but not all, and it is really a matter of personal taste and experimentation to find out whether these pants will really suit you and your game.

Each of our pants come in a wide range of sizes from 6 to 20, but it is always important to note which sizes are available for which pants. They are not all the same so to avoid disappointment, making sure that we have them in the size you need will prove vital. It is also important to ensure that they will work with other ladies golf clothes so you have at least one ensemble that works with you in golfing terms.

Tips for New Female Golfers

Any person who plays a sport, whether professionally or as a hobby, wants to do so to the best of their ability. While practice makes perfect, it also helps to know some little tricks and moves that you can incorporate to help improve your game. Here are some of our top tips for new female golfers to improve their performance on the green.

1. Get Properly Fitting Equipment
Even if you’re just getting started, it is worth spending some time and money on getting the right fitting equipment for you. Having poorly fitted equipment will have a negative effect on your performance, which may then discourage you from playing. Getting the right equipment isn’t about paying the most money, but about getting the right size. Your local golf course should be able to help you to get the right club measurements.

2. Buy Suitable Golf Clothes
If you’re joining a local golf club, then you should first check if there is a dress code that you need to follow before buying any women’s golf clothes. Having established what the permitted clothing is, you should buy clothes that are specially designed with the sport in mind, as these will be more comfortable and practical. Also think about the clothes you’ll need for different seasons of the year. We stock everything, from women’s waterproof trousers to ladies’ golf visors, so take some time to consider what you might need.

3. Make Sure You Practise
Having bought the right equipment and clothing, you need to make sure you actually use it! Golfing technique will only improve through practice, so do ensure that you visit the driving range regularly. Try to bear in mind everything your instructor has taught you, and incorporate his/her teachings into your practice. As well as going to the driving range, also make sure you get in a couple of full rounds every month.

4. Focus on Variety Rather Than Score
At the beginning, you are just learning the many different aspects to the game and so you shouldn’t worry too much about your score. It is better to apply all the different things you have learnt, trying out different shots and using different clubs, rather than trying to get a better score.

5. Develop Your Grip
A proper grip should be one of the first things you learn when taking up golf. Your grip will affect your swing and can make a real difference to your shot. For better control of the club, you should grip an inch down the shaft, with the shaft in the heel of your palm. Don’t grip too hard or too weakly – you’ll master this with practice.

6. Work on Posture
Posture is equally as important as grip. Avoid being too hunched or too rigid. The key is keeping your spine straight throughout the entire swing – many women find that they lose their posture partway through. Keep plenty of space between your chest and chin throughout the entire swing too. Remember, you can practise posture and grip at home without ever hitting a ball.

Buying Women’s Golf Fashion as Gifts

Professional female golfers, such as Paula Creamer, Michelle Wie and Natalie Gulbis, have demonstrated that it is possible to wear attractive and stylish women’s golf clothing as well as put in a good performance. Thanks to the success of these players, more and more women are starting to sport fashionable golf wear at their local golf clubs too. Looking good on the golf course is starting to become just as important as playing well, and indeed the confidence which comes as a consequence of looking good can also help your game.

If you know a lady who likes to play the sport, then some new golfing clothes can make great gifts for lady golfers. However, if you’re not into the game yourself, then finding the right gear can be trickier than it looks. You can always take her with you and let her choose her own clothing, but if you’re wanting to keep it a surprise, here are some handy tips to help you out.

1. Consider Fabric
As with other sports clothing, there are different fabrics to consider when buying golf clothes. Manufacturers are increasingly turning to moisture-wicking fabrics, which help to keep body temperatures regulated and remove sweat, which is a more comfortable and better overall experience for the golfer, thus also helping their game. Look for ladies’ golf tops and jackets which include moisture-wicking technology, whether they’re for winter or summer. The Adidas ClimaCool range offers “superior moisture management” and is the preferred choice of both Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis.

2. Check Out the Skort
As you might have guessed from the name, the skort is a cross between a pair of shorts and a skirt and is extremely popular with female golfers. First appearing on the golf course in the 1960s, skorts are a practical item of clothing which also offers a fashionable appearance through the femininity of a skirt but with the practicality of a pair of shorts. You can find skorts available in bright and bold colours and patterns.

3. Think about Colour
Especially if you’re just buying one item of clothing for your lady golfer friend, then it would be useful to know what other golfing clothes she already owns. Many female golfers like to look coordinated on the golf course, and so would want golf shirts, jackets, shorts and skirts that match what they already own. Particularly consider her golf shoes, which are now available in all kinds of colours, as she will probably have less of these than any other item, and therefore these will govern the rest of the colour scheme.

4. Seasonal Items
Although we’re not looking like we’re having much of a spring so far, when those bright sunny days do come, lady golfers everywhere will be heading to the green. Having suitable golf clothing for the weather is essential to a good performance, and so you might want to consider buying her a visor or golf cap or hat. Again, style is essential and for women more than men, an item of headgear can also help with hair control.

Museum puts female golf in the spotlight

In the past, golf tended to be the preserve of men, but now things are different. Lots of women like you are heading to driving ranges and golf courses to test their skills. Thankfully, there’s now plenty of women’s golf clothing to choose from, meaning it’s easier than ever to look and feel great on the fairways and greens.

The trend towards increasing female participation has been driven by a range of factors, including rule changes in clubs and social developments.

British Golf Museum

One institution that’s determined to recognise the role women have played and continue to play in the sport is the British Golf Museum. It has opened an exhibition focussing on women’s golf through the ages, The Courier reports.

It noted that the first lady golfer on record was Mary Queen of Scots, adding that by the end of the 18th century, the fishwives of Musselburgh were playing competitively to win a silk scarf.

Milestone

Meanwhile, by 1893, the Irish Ladies’ Golf Union and the Ladies’ Golf Union had been established and it was the latter, as opposed to gentlemen’s clubs, that established the universal handicapping system that remains the basis of the game today.

More recently

The publication noted that more recently, a rising number of ladies have made golf their profession, including Catriona Matthew, who was the first Scottish woman to win a major. She took top spot in the Ricoh Women’s British Open.

Student help

The exhibition is being organised by postgraduate students from the museum and from the gallery studies course at St Andrews University. Commenting on this, senior curator Laurie Rae said: “Working with the students has been a great experience for the museum, watching a dynamic new interpretation of our collections taking shape, particularly in the year in which the Ricoh Women’s British Open returns to St Andrews.”

Meanwhile, Louisa Grossi, one of the students involved in the project, added: “The exhibition has been a fantastic opportunity to highlight the importance of women’s golf history.”

Looking and feeling the part

Playing golf these days is very different from the experiences of early women participants. Now, it’s possible to use hi-tech clubs that add distance and accuracy to shots and, just as importantly, there are lots of fantastic items of clothing to choose from.

Looking and feeling good while you’re out on the course is crucial. With this in mind, you might want to take a look around our website here at LeSports. We offer an impressive selection of ladies’ golf trousers, ladies’ golf jackets and other garments that could be ideal for you.

Quick and easy

Buying items from us is quick and easy, so even if you’re operating on a tight time schedule, you won’t struggle. All you need are a spare few moments and a web connection.

Also, by perusing our range, you’ll be able to find products that can see you through all kinds of British weather, from the cold and wet to the hot and dry.

Staying warm on the golf course

If you’re not careful, playing golf at this time of year can be miserable. You might start your round with high hopes for a great day on the course, but as soon as your feet get wet or your hands get cold, the smile might disappear from your face. You might even decide to abandon rounds midway through simply because you’re feeling the chill.

Of course, it doesn’t have to be like this. As long as you’ve got the right ladies’ golf clothes and accessories, you can enjoy this fabulous sport in virtually any weather conditions. These days, it’s easier than ever to stock up on the best products and then all that remains is for you to remember to wrap up before you step up to the tee.

Headwear is crucial

You’ll probably be aware that you lose most of your body warmth through your head. This is because heat rises. To help keep you toasty, it’s therefore important to make sure you wear a good quality hat.

One option is the Fila Vintage Winter Beanie Skull Hat. This is soft and comfortable. In fact, once you’ve put it on, you may completely forget it’s there. With a stylish Fila plated logo on front and made from cable knit, it also looks the part and it’s finished with a charming bobble top.

Another great product is the Green Lamb Ladies Golf Fleece Hat. This is ideal for golfers who favour quality and style and its luxurious fleece material is really effective at trapping warmth. It even has two special flaps to keep wearers’ ears warm.

Don’t let your hands go numb

If you’ve ever tried playing golf with numb fingers, you’ll know how frustrating it can be. As well as being uncomfortable, it can really throw your game. Let’s face it, getting a good round in can be tricky enough without extra obstacles like this.

To ensure your mitts stay warm, it’s a good idea to always have a pair of gloves with you. Of course, you can remove these when you’re taking your shots, but there tends to be plenty of time in between when your hands can really start to feel the chill.

To protect this part of your body, you might opt to invest in a pair of ladies’ golf gloves. For example, there are the Green Lamb Thermolite Micro Gloves to consider. These come in classy black or cheerful orange and they boast patented microfiber technology that offers a natural, softer feel.

Bodywarmers

Of course, a hat and gloves won’t suffice as an outfit for the golf course. Thankfully, there are lots of ladies’ golf trousers, ladies’ golf sweaters and other items for you to choose from.

To complete your ensemble, you might opt to go for bodywarmers. These can look great and they don’t restrict your movement at all.

Take your pick

Here at LeSports, we stock an array of products, including warming garments and accessories that are ideal for the winter season. If you need to invest in items like this, just take a look around our website.

Suitable Apparel for Lady Golfers in Britain

The fact that you are reading this makes it likely that you are one of the many women who have fallen in love with the great game of golf. Indeed, many more women have now begun to realise that launching a little white ball hundreds of yards along an immaculately manicured landscape is able to provide a satisfaction which is completely and utterly transfixing.

However, there is one element of golf which can be very frustrating indeed – the weather.

Four Seasons in One Day

Like many other outdoor sports in Britain, golf has to contend with weather conditions that are unpredictable and fast changing. To be sure, the ‘four seasons in one day’ phenomenon which is such a feature of British weather patterns means that you can step out of your house under clear blue skies in the morning yet find yourself being ambushed by wind and rain by the time you’re half way around your local course at lunch time.

Fortunately, there are plenty of golf clothes available these days which can help to protect you from the fickle nature of the British weather. Indeed, sports garment manufacturers now produce a great many high-quality golf clothing items for ladies, many of which can ensure you stay dry, warm and comfortable when you’re out on the links.

The Importance of Being Suitably Prepared

In order to get the optimal benefits from your golf clothing however, you need to be suitably prepared. And the best way to do this is to call the weather’s bluff.

In essence, this means hoping for the best whilst preparing for the worst.  For example, taking a waterproof jacket with you (even on overtly clear and sunny days) will ensure that you don’t get caught out when showers turn up seemingly out of nowhere on the 9th hole.

Wearing layers of clothes can also be beneficial as it enables you to strip off or layer-up as and when your activity rate demands it. After all, there will be times when you’re striding purposefully along the fairways and moments when you’re standing around waiting to tee-off. Having the ability to add or subtract garments will enable you to maintain a temperature that is not only conducive to your game, but also to your wellbeing.

A great time to get stuck into golf

Traditionally, golf was a male-dominated sport and women barely got a look-in. However, this has all changed and the ladies’ golfing scene is now really taking off. So, as a woman, now is the perfect time to get stuck into this exciting activity. Of course, if you’re going to get the most from your experiences on the fairway, it’s important you look and feel the part and so it’s crucial you have the perfect ladies’ golf clothes.

Melissa Reid speaks out

One female ambassador for golf is Melissa Reid. Recently, the talented 25-year-old took time out from her campaign at the Ricoh Women’s British Open to support the drive to encourage more women to take up the sport. The four-time tour winner visited the Cheshire County Golf Partnership’s stand during the contest at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club to witness the efforts of those behind the ‘Get into golf’ campaign, the Liverpool Daily Post reports.

Run by the England Golf Partnership through its network of county golf partnerships, this initiative provides people with the chance to benefit from free or low-cost beginner courses with PGA professionals.

Plenty of opportunities for women

Commenting on the surge in female golfing activities, Reid said: “The Ricoh Women’s British Open shows that golf isn’t just a sport for the boys. The campaign means there are plenty of opportunities for any women and girls who have been inspired by what they have seen to give the game a go for themselves. “Free coaching and the loan of equipment means ladies of all ages and abilities can get into golf at their local club, driving range or through one of the schemes in the local schools.”

It’s not about power

Sometimes, women are put off trying golf because they assume the discipline requires lots of physical strength.  Arguing against this, Craig Thomas, county development office for the Cheshire County Golf Partnership, said: “Golf is not all about power but is a game that can be played by all ages and abilities while becoming a member of your local club not only offers the chance to take up a healthy pastime, but also to enjoy an active social life.” He added: “There has never been a better time for women and girls to get into golf.”
